Windows 7 periodically auto-defrags, as my comp is on most of the time, it shows 0% fragmentation on all the drives. So that's not the issue, I suspect however my primary hdd is showing age, as transfer rates have fallen to 10-20 megabytes/sec too..

Sahil, mostly an HDD issue. Try with a newer drive, or better still, an SSD. I edit RAW from my storage/dump drive, which is a 5000AAKS, and I don't have issues. However, PS CS5 is installed on my SSD, so that may speed things up as well.

I wonder my lappy running 32bit WinXP over Core 2 Duo at 2GHz with 2GB DDR2 667MHz RAM and on board intel graphics processes RAW with DPP as smooth as butter, no hiccups or anything. I believe there is no point in going for Quad Core or costly SSD's just for processing RAW files.

The fact with win7 is that around 1GB of RAM will be used for running the OS itself.

BTW, a dual core at 2GHz and 2GB ram does fine job... decent enough for dealing with RAW files...

I had used 2GB ram and on board graphics with a quad core and RAW processing experience was too good.. The upgradation I later made in graphic card and ram just made the experience smoother and faster.. ( CS5 loads is just 3 seconds ).. However, this made me realize that the older stuff was also way too potential to do the job...

Also, things in bold above makes a point... Win 7 itself will consume something 1GB.. so not a best option in case u are not upgrading the ram to 4GB or more..

BTW, I dont which HDD u are using, so cant really comment.. Dont think SSD is must.. something from current HDDs available in market will also do a fair good job..

Editing Raw files doesn't use much of the system resources. On ACR I had never faced problem with my 1st PC. A dual core 2.8 Ghz, with 2 GB ram. The system slows down when you open them in Photo shop for finishing.

But on my main pc C2D 6670, 4GB RAM, 512Mb graphic card, PS works like butter. Yes the OS earliers is 64 bit XP now 64bit Windows 7.

Download and try CCCleaner its free and does a good job of optimizing the PC performance.

For most people a PC is a tool which is supposed to help them in PP'ing the images they click. Dwelling too much on that PC will make  all amateur photographers PC technicians.

PCs are a big waste of time when they do not work as they are supposed to or when they break down.

This is my take, of course yours would be different.

Oops I am going way too OT here........The OP and mods won't be too happy about it.....

It's not that I have no other work and keep on tinkering with PC but the main problem happens due to bloated registry if you know how to safely clean it then may be reinstall is not needed.
De-fragmentation takes time so one should start late night and leave it running overnight, Also if you set the tasks like weekly / monthly defragmentation the situation never arrives.

Reinstall does not necessarily need complete backup anyway. You can just install OS copy on a different partition.
