What is the current market price for 50D?
« on: August 01, 2011, 03:09:39 PM »
Hi Friends,
I have done enough with 550D and want to migrate to 7D or 50D.... I just want to know what is the current price of 50D(body only) first hand, and if its seconds.... For 7D, I inquired already and may get at around 78K. (Body only)

Also, what is the kit lens that comes with 50D, if at all one wants to buy?

Thanks
Vijay S

Curious, I believe when you say enough, I assume you have a good arsenal of quality lens, so in that case why would you care about kit-lens?

Well, just curious to know with what lens it used to come... 18-55 or 18-135 or 17-85?

Nobody uses 50D it seems :)

I bought 50D about 14 months back. Didn't buy the kit lens (18-55 IS). Bought the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 VC.

I think all Canon APS-C cameras come with 18-55mm IS lens as kit lens, apart from entry level which come with 18-55 non IS lens.

i use a 50D and bought it body only.

i think 50D had 3 different "kits". with 18-55IS, with 18-200IS and with 28-135IS.

50D is a very demanding body with 15 megapixels cramped in the aps-c sensor. so, it has got BIG hunger for light, which a f/2.8 or faster lens can only satisfy. hence, i would recommend going for something like 17-50/2.8 from sigma/tamron. another good (but pricey) option is canon 17-55/2.8 or canon 17-40mm L.

cheers!

first hand 50Ds are not available as it's a discontinued model after arrival of 60D.
i have seen good condition second hand 50Ds going for 35-36K, so you can keep checking jjmehta forum here and may be you'll be lucky to get a good deal.

one more question. why are you preferring mag-alloy body? any particular reason? i have used 60D and can confirm you'll never feel that it is not of mag-alloy. it feels just the same as a 50D.

cheers!

Firstly I am preferring 50D  because the pixel density is lower than 18Mpx on the same sensor.(I feel some how the more the pixel density the more crumpled the pixels and they cannot catch the light good). Secondly I need the LCD display on the right, than looking at the back LCD.... gives me the film SLR feel I used to. Thirdly, the body is tough and sealed good :)

I am still struggling to choose 7D or 50D, to be frank!

Thanks

While your other reasons may have merit and you may buy 50D for those reasons,  the reason "feel some how the more the pixel density the more crumpled the pixels and they cannot catch the light good" is not correct. Because the pixel size on any sensor is in micro meters and the wave length of visible light is 380 nanometres to about 740 nm so there is a good difference of order of 10^3 although there is nothing such as size for light but wavelength is closest. This FUD of not enough real estate has disappeared from know-all websites after Nikon released higher MP bodies.

7D , 60D and 550D have same 18MP sensor which has less noise then 50D/500D 15.1 MP sensor
you can check on your fev. sensor data related sites for verification.

Amit please add... I am already observing this...

For 18mp sensor you will need proper glass... Any low resolution glass will leave you running for more gear... Kitlens doesnt help at all, and am running for something with higher resolution like 17-50mm tammy f2.8 or sigma counterpart .

Till now the best performance I observed was on my tokina 100mm macro lens and on 50mm prime... on other lenses if I blow my pics even to 60 to 70% it looks a bit soft...

Thanks Arindaom and Amit for clarification... Now I get it...so 7D is preferable you say... and Arindom says, the EF-S lenses wont do good, right?

Hi Vijay,
Why don't you get a good glass instead of upgrading to a 50D or 7D? Tamron 17-50 F2.8 VC is good fast lens though a bit pricey (approx. 30K) Very good for low light photography.

I take your suggestion too... and hold on for some more time... I have the 50mm 1.8 prime any way.... but let me check the others too...

18mp sensor of 550D performs better than 15mp sensor of 50D in terms of metering and high iso noise. so, sensor wise, 550D is a better body. if you more into landscape/macro/portrait, then you have already got a good body. you need good fast lenses to extract maximum capability out of that sensor now.

if you are more into sports/action/wildlife, then you need a faster focusing system with better frame rate. here a 50D or a 7D might help. but then also, you would require top notch glasses to get benefit of the body's performance.

so, i recommendation would be to understand your need according to your shooting genre and then only upgrade body or buy good glasses.

cheers!

Sigh how to say but that has nothing to do with sensor , Try a 50D or 500D and observe yourself.
