Need help in selecting first DSLR
« on: March 02, 2012, 12:01:23 AM »
Hi guys,

I have gone through the "Buying your first dslr" thread.

I have decided on a used but good condition canon 1000d with is lens.

And after going through the options available in buy and sell section, I found around 4 deals for it.

My budget is around Rs.15k including lens. Please advice which deal should I go for.

Thanks A lot in advance!

You want us to become enemies with our forum members who are selling 1000D by selecting one of them  ;) , dude just see all the deals check the age of the camera ask for detailed pictures or if u r in the same city check the cam yourself , check how old and then decide your self . Just one thing I can suggest go for the combination with an IS lens if possible  :)

ALL THE BEST

Buy the camera and post lots of good photographs in our Photo gallery section .

I didnt mean that.   :-\

Just want to know the criteria for selecting one.

I mean what should be on priority? Age/Shutter count/what else?

Thanks again!

You will want to check:
- Shutter Count: The basic DSLR cameras are rated for 50000 shutter clicks with the Shutter unit. The shutter unit will probably last well beyond the rates limits, in any case, they are replaceable.
- Dead Pixels / Hot Pixels on Sensor: In rare cases, the sensor will develop pixel defects and since you are on an inspection spree, you might as well test it.
- Scratch / Fungus on Lens: Scratch will probably be absent on cameras maintained with loving care and fungus is a higher possibility in coastal areas of India only.
- Lens Aperture & Focus function: Are the aperture blades on the lens working smoothly? Is the lens auto-focusing? Is the focus ring firm yet smooth in operation?
- Lens Zoom Ring function: Is the lens zoom ring firm yet smooth in operation?
- Scratch, Dust, Dent on Camera: What is the cosmetic condition of the camera? Are the knobs, buttons, sliders, switches working as expected? Are the various sockets for output and tripod mount in good condition and working as expected?
- Battery Life: What is the current battery life of the camera?

Anything else I have forgotten? Like are you getting the box? the cds? the pouch? the cables? the original bill? warranty certificate?

Hey thanks a lot for such detailed info!

So To inspect in such details, I should visit the seller personally to avoid any issues.

Ok, will get back with more queries if any.  :D

Hey guys,

Finally bought Olympus E-PM1 mirrorless DSLR from JJMehta - Dadar :)

Actually I had zeroed in on Cannon 1100D (with IS kit lens) before going there, but Ramesh at JJMehta explained to me all the specs of E-PM1 as compared to 1100D for more than an hour.

I was satisfied with this one and bought it!  8)

Congratulations and welcome to the almost non-existent but awesome micro four thirds club :). Did Ramesh tell you about availability of lenses? I am curious if he has any plans of stocking them as well.

Congrats ! Though Canon guys won't be too happy with you ditching Canon and choosing Olympus. :P
Are you a Konica Minolta or Sony Alpha DSLR user? If yes, then please check out http://www.flickr.com/groups/sony-alpha-india/

I like Brendon in this regard... he never promotes Sony and is very candid in his reviews . Based only on his words I got a Sigma 10-20... (did not put into use yet due to many reasons). :P

I did not ask for any particular one, just asked whether lenses are available with them or not.  :-\

Okay, as long as he'll able to provide you with lenses, it should be good. Else there are hundreds of old lenses that you can use with adapters.

Try to go for a 1100D. you can start with kit lens of 18-55 IS, but I suggest replace 18-55 with EF-50mm/1.8 (almost same cost).

1100D have better sensor and IQ and you can go along with this body for at-lest 2-3 yrs from now.
Later add up more lenses as you go along with.

Good luck.

Still trying to shot my best...

Artillery: Canon 1100D and few (actually) essentials.

^^ There is nothing listed on their website ? In any case as Hellwrath said, you have thousands of old lenses that will work on your new camera. :)

@Proton - Thanks ! :D

Olympus is good.

But it makes this hobby (more) expensive.
