Yep, this is a little gem. I have the AIS version (optically identical I think), and I much prefer to carry it around than my 80-200 f/2.8.

Ben dying to try it out on a EVIL camera - will get a 400mm f/4 lens on that!

Congratulations, MRK.

I have the older, multicoated version made just before AI. I had it modified by John White at aiconversions.com so that I can use it on a modern body, as well as my older bodies. It is one of my favorites.

For a prime it's not as sharp wide open as I would expect. Or is the soft image at F4 a technical issue?

I've got one too :) Havent used it since a long time though...

@lightwave - id given mine to abhishek along with a 2x nikon converter for one of his trips with dranand...he said it was quite good wide open...

@vikram - never thought about a micro 4/3rd but ur right it will be very well suited for it as its quite small for a 200mm prime..

It's an excellent lens, very sharp with wonderful contrast. I had the Ais version but sold it as I was not comfortable with manual focus  :(

It does not seem sharp at f4 (wide open). Will test it out thoroughly during the weekend and revert.

toofan,

I did not even know about this lens, stumbled upon it and the rave reviews it got. Looked for it here on JJM in B&S and found it, called the owner and sealed the deal. All over the weekend.........

I sincerely hope you get one asap.

M.

Toofan,
I am not sure if you want this or the macro version (the one Ram has). I doubt this one's a macro lens.

Either that, or he wants to reverse a 28/50mm lens at the end of it and get  MASSIVE magnification

Yup, I am thinking of the same. As a 200mm manual lens sells at better affordable price. :)

Also thinking of using it with extensions  for getting a better background and working distance.

Veeresh: If ever I needed to buy a macro lens that would most probably be a 150 to 200mm.

This is a fantastic lens... pure gem... and just a joy to use... One of the reasons my trek was effortless at Phansad... it's very light and has a very useful retractable built in hood that comes in handy... I got very good shots with it with the 2x Nikon 201 TC pretty sharp wide open...

Congrats on the gem MRK... I'm sure you'll enjoy using this one...

I was toying with the idea of getting a TC anyway and your post provides me the necessary encouragement. Can you please share link to your pics you took with this lens and the 2x TC ?

Thanks

M.
