Canon 500D or 550D
« on: June 12, 2012, 02:42:41 PM »
Hi All,

I am bit confused on the choice between 500D and 550D. The price differential is Rs 7000 and the main feature difference I could see is video quality.

Am I missing on the some other feature. Do you think the difference is huge to still go for 500 D over 550 D

Warm regards,
Nikhil

550D has newer sensor with better AF and metering. Worth the price difference.
Mk III, Some lenses. Couple of flashes and a 1.4x TC.

When I purchased 500D the difference was around 10K. And I wasn't a member of JJMF and had no one to suggest me. Though 500D is good, you must go for 550D anytime.

Hi Nikhil,

Both share the same AF system but since the 550D has a newer processor its possible the speed is slightly better.

Also the sensor on the 550D is slightly better if you go by DXOmark -

IMO, concentrate on the image and shooting great pictures, because still there are people who are doing great job in this art using 350D and 400D and making a kill. 500D and 550D are far superior technically in a way so slight speed difference and little faster AF on a crop body is not a that big deal.

550D anyday.
Since these cams had got old, I dont remember valid points to put over why 550D is better choice than 500D but it is.
When I brought 550D 2yrs ago I learned the differences.

Actually I already own a Canon 50D and am going for my second camera..so thought will go for the cheaper 500d over 550d....

why i need a second camera...because I do lot of biking trips..and find scared to carry 50d at times in the rains and the long trips i go for..further canon 50d is heavy ..

In that case buy a second hand 1000D or 350D to use as a backup camera. I am keeping my cheap A700 for the same purpose to use during the rains.

Hi Nikhil,

Isn't the 50d - with its weather sealing and tougher build - supposed to be better suited for tough conditions (including 'long' trips)?

In this case give a look to the mirrorless cams also. As those will be smaller and can be used in many other places where taking a big camera is not suitable.

Hi,

Mirorless am keen..but being in Canon family..do I have an option ? Tempted could go for Sony, but would mean investing in Sony lens, which will be an expensive affair..
