I had the privilege of shooting the Bharatanatyam Aarangetram of the daughter of our family friends last Saturday. 70-200 F/2.8 VR would have been the lens of choice but since I don't have it, I shot with AFS105mm F/2.8 Micronikkor with VR on - handheld. Lighting was tough and White Balance was arrived at by some trial and error.

Some good practice for me, as my own daughter gets there in about 2-3 years time.

Nice capture Ram sir,
But IMHO i find the lower end of curtain in most of the photos is very distracting. If it can be cloned out it would look much better.

Blue background shown some photo as green..( Just my thought)

Aravindan - Possible. Honestly I just tried to be true to the scene. The lights were all different colors and I don't recall how many different colors of lights were used. I tried to keep the color of the dress more or less constant.

I was 20 to 40 feet away. The shots made from farther away are cropped slightly.

its been a while seeing you here.yes, it seems you are in great shape and by your pics in great spirits .lovely pics ,clean, crisp and lots of expression there. one thing i am sure you need a 70-200 2.8 before your child's performance .i am sure you can get closer to freeze those expressions

Excellent sir.... All photos are very sharp..

we are amazed with out using zoom and entire programme managed by using 105/2.8-VR.

Srini, You are right. With 150-200mm Focal Length Facial close-ups would be possible. This was not a paid event for me, so I did not bother about renting the 70-200mm Lens. Else I sure would have.

Thns Sir for sharing such superb captures....I wud have preferred dark maroon bg.... You cannot help here, but I wud like to know your choice of bg....? The dress too was blue. The distance of the dancer was also not much from the background......Yea...exposure and sharpness are laudable....
200mm 2.8 VR wud have certainly helped in more diffusion of the bg......my views.

Hi Image Sir,

All the pics are amazingly sharp, I too once got a chance to click few shots on an occasion.
Really balanced colors between BG and the subject, the black BG one really stands out.

I tried to do a monochrome and I was quite happy, I think the 4th shot would look nice in monochrome.

PS: All though these pics are a celebration of colors among many others, i fell that making monochrome would bring out the expressions of the face a bit more.

The background is simply not in my control. Yes, the dancer is close to the screen in most shots. 200mm would have helped here for sure and it would have definitely helped close-up of the face showing good expressions.

The screens on the side are black and those that I shot from the side have the black background.

I will try a few B&W also to see how they turn out. End of the day whatever the family likes is what goes for print. I have some 150GB of Video Footage to edit
