Ultrawide and Zoom lenses for 5D Mk2
« on: July 06, 2012, 02:29:19 PM »
Hello,
Considered many options, finally found the Tokina AT-X 16-28mm f/2.8 Pro FX Canon-ef for the wide angle.
Anybody have experience with this one, good/ bad please.

Zoom: Again one more Tokina: AF 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 SD AT-X 840AF II
Read somewhere that at 400 not very sharp. No IS.
Still at the price, seems ok, if sharp at 300. Equal Canons are 3 times high priced.
(I am no wildlife, landscapes, buildings, no studio either. Zoom has moderate importance only)

Thanks in advance...

From the review of the 16-28mm on photozone it seems to easily match the Canon 16-35mm f2.8 L in sharpness if not bettering it. (At least in the all important 16-20mm range where this sort of lens is sure to be used a majority of times).

However the lack of any filter ring is a major drawback IMO and those looking to use GND and ND filters will be out of luck.

I would strongly recommend that one does NOT get the Tokina 80-400mm unless its really really cheap (10-15k max). The Canon 70-300mm IS is sharper at 300mm and the Tokina is VERY soft at 400mm making it practically useless. Cropping the Canon 70-300mm IS to match the 400mm output of the Tokina is likely to result in images of similar sharpness.

Anirban Brahma has and uses the 16-28 Tokina - but the Nikon version, you can ask him about his opinion (he's on the forum).

I personally wouldn't get it as it doesn't take filters (atleast not without the $300 adapter).

Saharsh is selling a couple of UWA gems for about the price of a new 16-28, but I think that offer is open till only this evening. Search buy and sell and call him.

I personally use Canon 17-40mm L USM on my Canon 5D Mark II and III , but I might get the Sigma 12-24mm next month to compare the results and then will sell my Canon 17-40mm .

what's the purpose for getting the ultrawide? if landscape, then i would recommend the 17-40L as it's super-sharp, gives fabulous colors and takes front filters (screw in or square). if you are into streets/people/event photography, tokina 16-28 or canon 16-35 both should be excellent options considering the f/2.8 factor.

i guess you meant telephoto while taking the term "zoom" (a 12-24 or 8-16 is also a zoom lens)? if you are not into wildlife, then i would recommend the 70-300 L, if budget is not a constraint. if budget is a constraint, then a simple 70-300 IS USM should be fine for general use.

cheers!

Always prefer L for such kind of camera. Never thought of attaching other than  L on 5Dm2. 16-35 now cost 90K now , its too much money.

My options - save money on 17-40 , and as i said soumya buy new version of 70-300 L IS - its a killer lens ,always in shadow becoz of overprice. Features and IQ better than any zoom lens in the world.
