fantastic four | west bengal (horizontal frame added)
« on: July 08, 2012, 11:16:08 PM »
four friends walk down the river bed during a beautiful sunset in a west bengal village. it's monsoon time and there was a nice bit of shower in the noon. hence sky was awesome at sunset throwing away every possible color in the horizon!

honest feedback welcome.

cheers!
soumya

p.s. lot of people wanted to see a horizontal frame. so here it goes. this one doesn't have the kids, so it's a "pure" landscape  :)

hosted on facebook. hence a bit soft, i guess.

Amazing photo but why Portrait mode for Landscapes?

Excellent capture of the moment Soumya.
The metering is tricky in such shots but you did a fantastic job here.
A portrait frame would have captured less of FG and more of the dramatic cloud laden sky IMO.

thanks all for viewing and providing feedback. plz be open and criticize if you want. good discussions always start from good criticism. and we can all learn so much from good discussions.

Amazing photo but why Portrait mode for Landscapes?
i wanted to capture the mud patterns and also the green just in the immediate foreground along with the dramatic sky. horizontal shot won't let me include that much. there are a lot of landscape photographers who prefer vertical shots in such scenario. sharing one such profile, alonso diaz, one of my fav landscape photographers :-) (brendon should know him, he is a sony man).

i guess you meant landscape frame? the sky had drama near the horizon only as it's just at the sun down. the upper sky didn't have much clouds. on the other hand, there was interesting foreground which i wanted to add to make the composition stronger. hence the decision of a portrait frame, rather than a typical landscape frame with only sky and no foreground.

awesome - i like it minus kids  :D
yes pure landscapes shouldn't have any human element added. but, again, i am not a landscaper, i shoot people. i feel, human elements put life into a frame. hence the decision to keep the kids into this.

cheers!

Lovely pic - great use of camera orientation, the 'landscape' orientation would have only got you a great middle and background with zero foreground (so one to be binned).

This way you've got the green and then that fabulous light on the mud as foreground.

2 nitpicks:
1. Might have been nicer to have gone further around to the left to get the kids in the sunlight - to get them in the glow like the foreground mud.
2. I know it's not tilted, but having the opposite bank taken at this angle, just makes it look tilted - I might have chosen to correct for that 2D issue of a 3D subject.

I loved the different colors in the sky and ground. The dark blueish color of the clouds is looking very nice.

I am a sucker for colourful sunsets and dramatic skies and this one has them in dollops !!! :)

P.S. Actually I never heard of Alonso Diaz before but I have just added him on flickr. Love his work. :D
