Hong Kong view from the peak (added a new day shot)
« on: July 27, 2012, 04:51:44 PM »
Typhoon Vincent blasted Hong Kong and not a single minute passed without rain in my 5 days stay. This was probably my most difficult shot as I was struggling to stand with tripod, camera and remote trigger in one hand and umbrella in other while it rained with strong winds. Clicked some 250 pics. Most came out blurry because of the intense fog but managed few good pics too. This one was clicked when the skies cleared a bit for few seconds after I stood for about an hour and a half.

There was one more distraction. 2 American teens blondes wanted me to move from my spot so that they can click their pic with the p&s flash which was supposed to fall on the buildings behind. I denied politely. But seeing my struggle one of them held the umbrella for me so that I could click.

Will post the remaining pics soon.

very nice ....
To see a world in a grain of sand,
And a heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand,
And eternity in an hour.

Wow. Can say it was worth the 90 minute wait. You may want to consider a slightly tighter crop IMO though.
I could give you individual details about my lenses, body and filters, or I could just tell you I enjoy clicking pictures!

Adding the day shot from the same spot. Shot late evening, previous day.

the cropped version is very good..just correct the tilt..

imho the day pic is boring...maybe something at sunset or sunrise would be interesting..

Actually it ain't a cropped version. The foreground in the first shot was intentional. Second one different shot altogether. The tilt is deceptive maybe. Tried to correct quite a few times but everytime it feels tilted. (UWA effect?). Third is a dull shot but I posted it just for comparison - that how the scene changes from dull to beautiful at night. Sunset was a distant dream as it was raining 24x7. Also, not sure about the direction of sunset. Its probably on a different side (left maybe).

Prefer #1...the silhouette of the hill edge leads the eye nicely to the large skyrise mass.
Nice that you got some nice clouds to help add substance to the sky

First one is an absolute cracker, what a frame and cloud scape!!
Just wondering if some more details can be extracted from the black zones.
There was one more distraction. 2 American teens blondes wanted me to move from my spot so that they can click their pic with the p&s flash which was supposed to fall on the buildings behind. I denied politely. But seeing my struggle one of them held the umbrella for me so that I could click.

Of the blondes?  ;)

@himadi,vikramF lolll

@soumya I know most prefer the close cropped version but my personal fav is the first one, where I get a feel of sudden discovery of lights on climbing the hill.

Beautiful night shots of Hong Kong, Doc Amit.

I wonder if PS would allow you to set the buildings vertical. I understand that the convergence was really like that, seeing you were so high up. Another trick to accomplish that is to hold the film plane parallel to the building faces; but that may mean cropping away too much of the frame, or not having a wide enough angle to work with.

I like the cropped one most. The large dark area in the lower left of the wider shot seems a bit too dominant to me. Both very nice shots nevertheless. I like the balance between daylight and the night lights of the city. That makes it much more interesting than the day shot.

I wonder if a good UV would have helped cut through that haze in the day shot. Did you use one?

Oh, and those girls... Did they get the shot they wanted after you clicked?

First shot is a cracker in all respects ! The building in the fg added so much nice depth and feel, WOW.

Yes. Thats exactly why first one is my favorite. But majority seem to like the 2nd version.
