EVFs contd - Fuji X100

(1/1)

vkalia:
I went to buy an Olympus EM-D ABCDEFG5.     I walked out with a Fuji X100, cos it felt a lot better in my hand.

That being said, I stand by what I said about EVFs being hideous.    It is a not just an aesthetic  preference.

We all know that what you see has a dynamic range that far exceeds that of the sensor.  Compressing the dynamic range of the scene into an electronic display reduces the ability of the photographer to make creative decisions about exposure.

EVFs also lag.

Maybe some day they'll have the resolution and dynamic range of real life.  Until then, it completely beats me as to WHY people look at these things.   Help with exposure?   Take a test shot if you are starting out - within a couple of months, if that, you'll be nailing exposure without needing to rely on the histogram.     What else is there???

Leaving this aside, I love the Fuji X100.  I am going to cycle across Uganda for 3 weeks next month, and am going to shoot with this camera only.

Ummmmm ... but that would be true for all DSLRs too ... the dynamic range of the scene viewed through the OVF far exceeds that of the sensor too.

Yep. Agree. It's noticeably lesser in the OMD ... but it's still there (which might or might not be an issue based on what you shoot).

In one case, I can see the scene and decide how I want to record it on the sensor.

In the other case, I see a simulation of the scene without the dynamic range and have to base my decision on how to record this scene on this limited recreation.

I believe that the Fuji X100 also has an EVF, in addition to the OVF. How does that compare to the one used on the EM5 ? I believe that the one used on the EM5 is the same as the VF-2 Olympus viewfinder.

Ashim:
I have shunned EVFS for a long time. However, after using the Nikon V1 for some time now, I feel that EVFs are better in 2 aspects:

1.   For lenses with lower maximum aperture (those f/5.6 zooms), the EVF could show a brighter pic – helpful in situations having lower light.

2.   The view magnification is very helpful for precise focussing of manual focus lenses – my experience is between the D700 and the V1.
