Dealextreme 1.5M Tripod (5KG Load Max) Suggestion
« on: August 14, 2012, 12:10:52 PM »
Hello.

I am planning to place order for a tripod in Dealextreme site, below is the link.

http://www.dealextreme.com/p/1-5m-aluminum-alloy-digital-camera-tripod-5kg-load-max-15247

I will be using it on 7D and Canon 100-400 F4.5-5.6L Lens, if any of you have experience with this tripod please let me know and will it take the load of my camera gear..!

If I were in your shoes I would consider a Manfrotto or at least a Vanguard instead of this no name tripod. These will cost more initially but it turns out to be far cheaper in the long run. Trust me, I've been in this situation before..cheaping out on tripods and ballheads, finally upgrading to something that will last me a very long time. These upgrades cost me quite a bit of money along the way.

My advice would be to "get it right the first time". Go for a Manfrotto, or if that's too expensive a Vanguard. In my view a 7D and 100-400 deserve a good tripod. It will also work should you upgrade to a high end camera and lenses in the future.

Actually a member Amit bought that dealextreme tripod some time back. Its buried somewhere in this long thread - http://www.jjmehta.com/forum/index.php?topic=6991.165

If memory serves me, he tested this tripod with a few Manfrotto ones and found the Dealextreme tripod to be better.

I have no experience with this tripod so I cannot really comment but I have bought a Chinese ballhead for some $20 shipped and it was one of the best ballheads I have seen. Easily as good if not better than the Manfrotto ballheads priced at Rs 5500.
Are you a Konica Minolta or Sony Alpha DSLR user? If yes, then please check out http://www.flickr.com/groups/sony-alpha-india/

The tripod do have a name... its VICTORY 3001
I bought the same from DX last year after going through the aforementioned discussions in this forum.

Pros: pretty sturdy and stable; comparatively light for travel; comes with a nice adjustable sling bag; look of any high end professional model; Manfrotto ball head compatible; DX ships items labelled as "Gift" with content price mentioned as less than 10$, nice trick to dodge the custom duty  ;)

Cons:
the strap of the bag tore off from it's attachment after a few use, so had to be reinforced from a local shop; the base plate wobbled a bit, so the screw had to be shortened and tightened; no pegs at the end of legs; no weight hook; the shipping took me around 30 days (the maximum time was at local customs); the packaging took much insult during transit which perforated the packaging and scarred many places of the bag, but the tripod was intact.

I recommended it to many friends interested in cheaper solutions, and would do so to you too. But frankly speaking I have never tested with anything heavier than 1.5kg and upto that never noticed any wobble or creep. And for rest you can go through the discussions by Amit in the thread.

HI,

The victory 3001 ( Dealextreme tripod) is good one and as strong as any good quality sub 10K tripod.
I never tested with 7D and 100-400 Lens simply because I do not have them :-)

But if you have really heavy setup I think the latest one which I have reviewed Horusbennu with LX-5 head on the same thread is quite good.

I am not really sure if any sub 10 K tripod be it manfratto / Benro or this victory 3001 is good enough for a heavy setup with long focal length.

Regards
Amit
