The Great JJMPF Challenge Season 24
UDAYAN:
Dear Friends.
The theme for The Great JJMPF Challenge Season 24 is – “Nature’s Patterns”
Patterns in nature are regularities of form found in the natural world. The image has to have a natural pattern as part of the composition (not a man-made pattern).
The following definition of natural pattern seems to be appropriate for this competition (Source: http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk/iany/patterns/natural.htm) -
Pattern is a seen repetitive structure and the simplest interpretation is perhaps the wallpaper tiling, where a rectangular region tiles the plane infinitely without change. Such patterns are of course never really found in nature; in nature, the repetition is always approximate and finite -- no matter how carefully the bees shape their honeycomb, and no matter how many cells they construct, the cells vary in size and their rows come to an end. Ripples in a pond are all alike -- and all different. Their colours and brightnesses vary, sometimes in smooth gradients, sometimes in complex ways.
Most natural patterns should fit into the following categories:- .
1. Unaffected by human action e.g. leaf skeletons, crystal forms, clouds.
2. Shaped by forces of the world such as erosion by wind or water. e.g. limestone pavement, wave-cut platforms.
3. Occurring according to inevitable laws of construction. e.g. spirally arranged flower heads, pinecones, seashells.
4. Shaped by living things other than man. e.g. snakeskin, animal skin, seastars, honeycomb
Patterns abound in nature and here are few sample photos:
Hope this is a theme that will interest all members; so just venture out, use your observation and imagination and make some great images for the challenge.
