Hi,
I am starting out in the DSLR type of photography and am confused as to which camera to buy.
I am attracted towards the mirrorless genre.

Presently i have shortlisted the Pen EPL-1 and the nex.
both available below the 20k mark. I am new to this, and not sure about what lens and thing i would be using.

I would like to know which would be a better investment since i would be sticking with this for as long as possible.
I would be doing more of street photography, family outings and groups, and some travel photography.

Hi,

I am a beginner in DSLR, though I am using Olympus Point & Shoot Camera..VG-120. Do suggest me whether Canon 550D is the best choice, as on date. Also, I am interested in taking natural landscape photos and for functions.

Should I go for ES 18-135 lens?

Kindly share your thoughts on this.

Regards,
Nagarajan.

EPL1 would be my suggestion  . Reasons being  better lens line up in 4/3 rd , great out of camera JPEGS and at a price point of 17k INR ( JJMEHTA ebay ) its a steal. Its best suited for your needs . Recently recommended one to Uncle who is a avid trekker , and hes loving every bit of it .

Canon EOS 550D would be a very good choice . Since you said landscape and functions i would recommend  Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 non VC lens (19k INR) instead of canon 18-135 as the tamron one is a bit wider ( will help you in landscape ) and very fast lens ( f/2.8 would be helpful in indoor functions , as often low light shooting may be required ) . More over 17-50 is a much much sharper lens than 18-135.

All the best

Hi everyone!

A friend of mine recently informed me about this forum and I with no much delay registered to be a part of this great, enthusiastic family.
I've been using a point and shoot camera for the last 5 years as an amateur basically clicking landscapes and macros. Now, I have made up my mind to migrate to a DSLR to explore a new world out there which is out of reach of my present camera.

After a lot of market research and comparisons, I settled down with the Canon EOS 550D 18-135mm IS for a price of 50K INR in a local shop here. I would be glad if you guys let me know if I've made the right choice in my budget range of 50K or if there is something out ruling it. May be with the gear or the lens. I don't intend to invest again soon as I'm still a student and would take another couple of years to stand on my own feet :P

Thanks in advance. :)

Hi Guys,

I'm new on the forum and need some advice on my purchasing my first DLSR. I have been using the FZ-35 since the past two years and it was a great learning curve. But its time to move on and upgrade now. Plus i'm getting a pretty good deal for my FZ-35, which kinda gave me the final push to get on the DSLR bandwagon. ;)

I'm basically confused between the EOS 550 and newly launched EOS 650D. I'm not even considering the EOS 600D since it's not worth the extra 10k over the EOS 550D.

The major differences the the EOS 650D has over the EOS 550D include:
  • A Flip-Out Touch Screen
  • More Cross-Type Focus Points
  • Video Autofocus
  • In-Camera HDR
  • Better ISO Sensitivity
  • Faster Burst Rate

What matters for me is the 'Faster Burst Rate', 'More Cross-Type Focus Points' and 'Better ISO Sensitivity' with the latter being the most important. Is ISO sensitivity that good? Are all these features worth the 20-24k extra? Coz I think it it would be wise for me to save-up for better lenses instead. ;)

Also, another thing that worries me is that the EOS 550D has been declared as a EOL product? Will that have any effect on my purchase? I want to buy something that will last me for alteast the next 5-6 years... or maybe even more (support and after market accessories wise)

650D is a good product and will easily last you 5 years and more. Features are packed and also it has commander to fire reote flashes. If it fits your budget go for it with eyes closed.
Mk III, Some lenses. Couple of flashes and a 1.4x TC.

What about Canon 60D ? Better body, better burst rate and much bigger buffer, much more external controls, twin dials, better viewfinder and more software options like 1/3rd ISO stops (like ISO 320/640 etc) and costs around the same.

As far as I know the only real advantage the 650D has is a) A bigger name and b) Better video AF (with STM lenses only).

Okies... but as far as image quality is aren't both of these is same league? (they have same sensor)

As far as ISO performance (the crucial deciding factor for me) goes, after checking the ISO6400 and ISO12800 comparisons between both the camera's I hardly see any difference's - mostly since both have the same sensor...

What stunned me that the Nikon D5100 beat both of these in ISO performance, which is obvious since it had a slightly larger sensor. But I don't think I'll be going for a Nikon coz the cost of the lenses is quite high... unless someone's convinces me otherwise ;)

ISO 25600 does not matter as none of camera's gave a decent result :P

So I'm more inclined more towards the EOS 550D because then I'll have the additional funds for lenses immediately rather than wait for another 6 months... just hope that its not a error purchasing DLSR released two years back

Hope I'm making a right decision...

Same sensor = same image quality = false

The sensor is only a part of the image pipeline.

Also which "costly" lenses from Nikon are you talking about?

Sorry.. I dunno much about the technical stuff... but I thought that the Nikon D5100 has a superior image quality because of its bigger sensor... which also increases the ISO performance... anyways I just a beginner in the world of DSLR's

When comparing lenses on Flipkart I found that Nikkon lenses are a bit costlier when compare to the Canon ones (with AF and/or IS)

These are the couple of starter lens I'm planning to get...
    • Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II Vs. Nikon AF-S DX 55-300 mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR
    • Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Vs. Nikon AF-S 50mm F/1.8G (Nikon AF 50mm f/1.8D has no Autofocus)
    • Canon EF-S18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Vs. Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-200 mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II (Huge Difference)

      ----

Another question I wanted to clear out of my head.. is that when I visited the Camera Shops at Fort I found a significant difference in DLSR prices.. the 550D /w 18-55 IS II was available for 30.5k  instead of the MRP 34k and the 650D /w 18-55 IS II was available for 52k instead of the MRP 58k

The shops told me that these carried the standard two year Canon warranty and came with a VAT bill... So then why is there such difference in prices? Is it advisable to buy from these shops instead of the official Canon shops or official online outlets like Flipkart?? A bit confused here...

D5100 has larger sensor? Well technically yes ... By about 1mm.
And high ISO is equivalent. I have not been able to tell the difference.

Make your decision based on long term lens investments. Somewhere in my heart I knew I wantrd the 100-400 so brand selection was easy.

I could makes some differences is the ISO 12800 levels through this review - http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond5100/20 . The Bailey Irish Cream Bottle is better when compared to the 650D or the 550D

I also found this other review comparing the 600D with the D5100 - http://www.digitalreview.ca/content/Canon-Rebel-T3i-EOS-600D-Compared-to-Nikon-D5100.shtml .I don't know how trusted the source is, but are some stark differences in image quality, especially in the Auto Lighting Optimizer and the nifty Chromatic Aberration Correction and HDR functions.

Don't think long term lens investments would apply to me.. coz I'm never going to invest that kinda of cash into photography.. unless I make a profession out of it ;)

Best is to go and try handson. All contemporary DSLRs are produce hgh quality images and if you compare those within similar price ranges, the output is virtually indistinguishable. So buy one which you are happy with.

+1 Agree with what Lightwave says. If you are buying just a body + kit lens then any of the above will do. Go to a big electronic store where you are try them and buy which one feels best in your hands.

@Neville - If you look at the best photographs on the internet you will see maximum are shot at ISO 100 - 400. Rare expections include ISO 800 and ISO 1600.

I have never seen any noteworthy photographer using ISO 12800. So stop bothering about high ISO noise performance because you will hardly use even ISO 1600 let alone something like ISO 12800.

The choice is simple. If you like to shoot wildlife then Nikon has nothing for you in a budget range. The Canon 100-400mm has no third party equivalent that can match its sharpness, speed and convenience at anything near its price range. In fact no lens manufacturer (other than Sony) has something that can match the Canon 100-400mm L.

The 100-400mmm is used for both wildlife and even birding which makes it a very useful lens indeed.

On the other hand, Nikon has some cheap APS-C primes that you can use like the 35mm f1.8 and 40mm f2.8 macro that have no direct equivalents in the Canon camp.
