Finally we have the update everyone had expected at PMA, the new PowerShot S5 IS digital camera. The S5 IS features an eight megapixel 1/2.5" (5.8 x 4.3 mm) CCD sensor and a twelve times Image Stabilized zoom lens. Unfortunately this lens, while offering long reach with its maximum 432 mm equiv. FOV doesn't improve at the wide end with the same 36 mm equiv. FOV as the S3 IS. Improvements include Face Detection (for AF, AE and Flash in shooting mode and red-eye removal in playback), a 2.5" LCD monitor (up on the S3 IS) and a flash hot-shoe. Still no RAW support though.

Canon today announces the launch of the 12x optical zoom, 8.0 Megapixel PowerShot S5 IS. The new compact inherits optical Image Stabilizer (IS) technology, professional-grade optics and extensive movie functions while introducing a host of new features designed to increase the photographer’s success rate.

Powered by Canon’s DIGIC III image processor, Face Detection Technology improves focus, exposure and flash output for people shots while the new Red-Eye Correction feature effectively solves red-eye problems in captured photos. An increased sensitivity range of ISO 80-1600 complements the optical IS system for extended low light performance.

Other key advancements include a larger, higher resolution 2.5” vari-angle LCD, additional shooting modes and extended video recording. The compact design incorporates a new hot shoe that provides compatibility with selected Canon EX Speedlite external flashes, adding to an accessory list that includes Wide, Tele and Close-up converter lenses.

High performance optics

Ultra-low Dispersion (UD) lens technology

Extensive movie options
Shoot 30fps VGA quality movies with stereo sound, or record QVGA movies at 60fps and analyse in sharp slow motion. Make full resolution stills while recording with the Photo in Movie feature.

DIGIC III with iSAPS
Canon's DIGIC III processor provides lightning quick responses, superb image quality and advanced noise reduction for cleaner images at high ISO speeds. iSAPS technology analyses each scene to optimise key camera settings even before a shot is taken.

Face Detection Technology
Face Detection AF/AE/FE ensures superb people shots by automatically detecting up to 9 faces in the frame and selecting the optimum focus, exposure and flash settings. In Movie mode, Face Detection AF/AE achieves accurate exposure and focus even when the subject is moving towards or away from the camera.

Red-Eye Correction
During playback Face Detection Technology allows you to quickly and accurately correct red-eye.
