While batteries become smaller to fit into slimmer camera bodies, power consumption continues to grow from more and more camera functions. You get long-life operation of around 390 shots* on a single battery charge, thanks to new ICs, redesigned circuits, and the energy-saving Venus Engine IV image-processing engine. These improvements work together with an efficient, rechargeable lithium-ion battery to extend the shooting time.

Auto Scene Mode
In Auto Scene Mode, the camera senses the ambient conditions and automatically selects either Scenery, Portrait, Macro, Night Portrait or Night Scenery mode accordingly. Two detection functions are also activated simultaneously in Auto Scene Mode; Face Detection AF/AE detects faces in the frame, and Intelligent ISO Control detects subject movement. With the Auto Scene Mode doing all the complicated work for you, you'll find photography easier than ever to enjoy.

f/2.8 Bright Lens and 10.1-megapixel Resolution
The 10.1-megapixel resolution DMC-FS42 packages a superb f/2.8 LUMIX DC VARIO lens with 4x optical zoom (35mm film camera equivalent: 33-132mm) into a compact body.

4x Optical Zoom and Up to 7.1x Extra Optical Zoom
The DMC-FS42 is equipped with a 4x optical zoom lens (35mm film camera equivalent: 33-132mm) that captures beautiful shots of people or landscapes with 10.1-megapixel full resolution. In addition to the 4x optical zoom, the DMC-FS42 offers an Extra Optical Zoom function. Further, in 3-megapixel resolution mode, it provides additional magnification, extending the zoom power to 7.1x by using the center part of the CCD.

High-resolution Intelligent LCD
The DMC-FS42’s 2.5-inch LCD has a total of 230,000 dots for high resolution. It features the Intelligent LCD function. The Auto Power LCD function increases the backlight brightness in 11 steps according to the ambient light intensity. At the highest of these 11 steps, the LCD backlight becomes approx. 1.4 times brighter than normal. This makes both shooting and viewing photos easier and more convenient.
